11.7 Substituting dont , où, dans lequel / laquelle / lesquels / lesquelles, que
de + où = d' où can be substituted by dont or duquel / de laquelle / desquels / desquelles or que. Usually dont is preferred.
Examples
Le pays d' où il vient.
Le pays dont il vient.
Le pays duquel il vient.
The town from where he comes.
La maison d' où il est sorti.
La maison dont il est sorti.
La maison de laquelle il est sorti.
The house out of which he has come.
With sayings, proverbs and fixed expressions often is already determined which relative pronoun to use. Some expressions of time rather use que than où.
